Watch the following video about the history of UN peacekeeping and answer the following questions.

  • Who were the first peacekeepers and what did they do?
  • Which nations were involved in the Suez Canal crisis?
  • Who proposed the blue helmets as an international armed force?
  • What are the three principles that guide peacekeeping operations?
  • What prevented the UN from taking its full proper role as a peacekeeping organization?

    -The Canada's Minister.

    1.-That he parties in conflict be ready to accept the pressence of UN peacekeepers to help them resolve the differences.
    2.-A cease fire must be in place.
    3.-Peacekeepers will not use force except in self-defense.

    .-What prevented the UN from taking its full proper role as a peacekeeping organization?
    -The Cold War

    .-Where were some of the biggest failures of the blue helmets?
    -The break-up of Ygoslavia, the genociede of Rwanda and difficulties in Somalia.

    .-Mention two examples of places were only the UN would have operated (and did)
    -El Salvador & Cambodia.

    -Humanitarian aid, monitoring of human rights, disarming, building national institusions and training the police.

    -The womens are strong to empower mission where the womens are even more victimised than the men.

    -Half of 1% of thw militar spending...

    .-What values are required by the blue helmets?
    -Deal with people of different cultures, resistence and the believe that working together they can make a better world.
